SSRS - Lessons Learned at the University of Iowa

Russ Allen, Lead SQL Server DBA University of Iowa

SQL Server Reporting Services is rapidly becoming the environment of choice for report development at the University of Iowa. For the last three years, the Information Technology Services department at the University has been providing support and guidance for organizations across campus as they have developed SSRS replacements for their aging mainframe, MS Access and Excel-based reporting systems. Given the extreme diversity of computer technology and developer expertise at the University, making the transition to SSRS has not always been easy. Russ Allen, Lead SQL Server DBA at the University of Iowa, will provide an overview of the University's SSRS environment, and will discuss the challenges faced and lessons learned. Presentation topics will include the University's SSRS architecture and central hosting service, report development and design recommendations, special considerations for different client OS and browser technologies, and best practices when connecting to Oracle data sources.
